Bengal Colours & Patterns

A comprehensive guide to recognised and non-recognised Bengal colours and patterns. Adelhills focuses on striking contrast and rosetted patterns in Snow, Brown and Silver colours.

Colour Varieties

Bengal cats come in recognised colours (Brown, Silver, Snow, and Blue) as well as non-recognised colours including Melanistic/Solid, Cinnamon (Red), and Chocolate. The Charcoal pattern can overlay any base colour.

Brown

A recognised Bengal colour and one of the most iconic. Brown Bengals display a warm, rich background ranging from tawny golden to deep mahogany, with dark brown to black markings.

Brown Bengals have the widest range of background shades, from cool grey-brown tones to hot, rufous orange-gold. The most prized brown Bengals have a warm, buttery ground colour with high contrast, jet-black rosettes, and a light, almost white belly. Black paw pads and a dark tail tip are characteristic. Eye colour ranges from gold to green. Adelhills focuses on striking contrast and rosetted patterns in Brown.

Silver

A recognised Bengal colour with a striking, cool-toned appearance. Silver Bengals have a near-white to pale silver background and dark grey to black markings.

The silver colour is produced by the inhibitor gene (I), which suppresses the production of yellow/warm pigment (phaeomelanin) in the coat. This results in a clear, bright silver or white background with dark, high-contrast markings. Silver Bengals can vary from very light and icy to a slightly warmer silver. Tarnish (warm yellow tones) is considered a fault. The best silvers have crystal-clear backgrounds with intense black rosettes. Snow Seal Lynx Point

A recognised Snow variation. The lightest of the snow Bengals, Seal Lynx Points are born almost completely white and develop their markings over time. They have striking blue eyes.

Seal Lynx Point Bengals carry two copies of the Siamese colourpoint gene (cs/cs). Kittens are born white or very pale and their markings gradually darken over the first few weeks and months. Adult coats range from ivory to cream with light tan to dark brown markings. They always have blue eyes, which is unique among the snow varieties. The contrast between background and pattern intensifies with age.

Snow Seal Mink

A recognised Snow variation with beautiful contrast. Seal Minks carry one copy each of the Siamese and Burmese colourpoint genes, creating a perfect middle ground.

Seal Mink Bengals (cb/cs) are born with visible markings and have an ivory to cream/caramel background with warm brown markings. They develop richer colouring than Seal Lynx Points and often have the best contrast of the three snow varieties. Their eye colour is typically aqua or blue-green, which is highly prized. Seal Minks can only be produced by breeding a Lynx to a Sepia, or two Minks together.

Snow Seal Sepia

A recognised Snow variation and the warmest and darkest of the snows. Seal Sepias carry two copies of the Burmese colourpoint gene and are born with clearly visible markings.

Seal Sepia Bengals (cb/cb) are the warmest-toned snow variety. Their background ranges from warm cream to golden-caramel, with chocolate to deep brown markings. They are born with visible pattern and develop richly coloured coats. Eye colour is gold, green, or hazel -- they do not have blue eyes. Sepias can sometimes be mistaken for very light brown Bengals, but their warmer, more buttery tones and lighter background distinguish them. Blue

A recognised Bengal colour with a soft, steel-blue to powder-blue coat and darker blue-grey markings. This colour is produced by the dilute gene.

The blue colour is produced by two copies of the recessive dilute gene (d/d), which dilutes black pigment to a blue-grey. Blue Bengals have a cool, slate-blue to soft powder-blue background with darker steel-blue markings. They often have a slightly peachy undertone to their belly. The overall effect is softer and more subtle than the bold brown or silver.

Charcoal

A distinctive pattern overlay rather than a separate colour. Charcoal Bengals display a dark, smoky appearance with a dark "cape" across the back and a dark facial mask.

The charcoal trait is produced by specific combinations of the agouti gene (Apb allele from the Asian Leopard Cat). Charcoal Bengals have a darker background colour, reduced contrast between ground and pattern, a distinctive dark dorsal cape, and a "Zorro mask" on the face with dark nose bridge. Charcoal can occur in any base colour: brown charcoal, silver charcoal, snow charcoal, and blue charcoal are all possible. The trait adds a dramatic, moody quality to the coat.

Melanistic / Solid

A non-recognised colour. Melanistic (black) Bengals appear solid black at first glance, but their pattern is visible in certain light, creating a stunning "ghost" marking effect.

Melanistic Bengals carry two copies of the non-agouti gene (a/a), which produces solid-coloured rather than banded hairs. While they appear black, their Bengal pattern is still present and can be seen in bright light or sunlight as a subtle, glossy pattern against a matte background -- similar to the pattern visible on a black panther (which is actually a melanistic leopard). Melanistic is not recognised for showing.

Cinnamon (Red)

A non-recognised colour. Cinnamon Bengals display a warm, reddish-brown hue that is lighter and warmer than standard brown, with lighter brown markings.

The cinnamon colour is produced by the b1 allele of the Brown gene, which lightens the eumelanin pigment to a warm, reddish tone. Cinnamon Bengals are quite rare and are not accepted for showing in most registries. The overall effect is a striking, warm-toned coat that stands apart from traditional brown Bengals.

Chocolate

A non-recognised colour. Chocolate Bengals have a warm, rich brown coat with darker chocolate-brown markings, lighter and warmer than standard brown.

The chocolate colour is produced by the b allele of the Brown gene, creating a warm, milk-chocolate tone in the markings rather than black. Chocolate Bengals are rare in the breed and are not accepted for showing in most registries. They can be distinguished from brown Bengals by their lighter, warmer marking colour and pink-toned paw pads.

Pattern Types

Bengal patterns set them apart from all other domestic cat breeds, mimicking the wild markings of their leopard cat ancestors.

Spotted

Spotted Bengals display distinct markings across the body. Spotted patterns include Single-Spotting (solid, single-coloured spots), Cluster Rosettes (groups of small spots forming a cluster), Paw-Print Rosettes (open on one side like a paw print), Doughnut Rosettes (fully enclosed dark ring with lighter centre), Arrowhead Rosettes (triangular, pointing towards the tail), and Embryonic Rosettes (small, partially formed rosettes that hint at development).

The best spotted coats have large, well-spaced spots or rosettes with sharp edges and strong contrast against the background colour. Arrowhead rosettes are especially prized as they are unique to the Bengal breed. Adelhills focuses on striking contrast and rosetted patterns, selecting for well-defined, large rosettes in their breeding programme.

Rosetted

Two-toned markings that mimic the rosettes of wild cats like leopards and jaguars. Rosette types include Cluster, Paw-Print, Doughnut, Arrowhead, and Embryonic variations, each named for their distinctive shape.

Rosettes are spots with a darker outline and a lighter centre. Paw-Print Rosettes are open on one side, Doughnut Rosettes form a fully enclosed ring, and Arrowhead Rosettes have a triangular shape pointing towards the tail. Large, well-defined rosettes with strong contrast are the most sought-after. Adelhills selects for rosetted patterns to produce kittens with the most striking wild-type appearance.

Marble

A flowing, swirled pattern with several variations: Tri-Colour (three distinct tones), Quad-Colour (four tones), Horizontal Flowing (preferred horizontal orientation), High Acreage (large open areas of ground colour), Chaos Pattern (random asymmetric swirls), Sheeted/Closed Pattern (dense, connected markings), and Bull's-Eye (circular pattern, less desirable).

Marble Bengals have a flowing, asymmetrical pattern of swirls and horizontal streaks that should be clearly distinct from a classic tabby's bull's-eye pattern. Horizontal flow is preferred over vertical or circular patterns. Tri-colour and quad-colour marbles with multiple tones within the pattern create a stained-glass or ocelot-like appearance and are especially dramatic. High acreage marbles showcase more of the ground colour between the markings.

Special Features

Beyond colour and pattern, Bengals can display several unique coat features that add to their wild and exotic appearance.

Glitter

A unique Bengal trait where the coat appears to shimmer and sparkle in the light. Caused by translucent, hollow hair shafts that catch and reflect light, giving the coat a gold-dusted or crystal-dusted appearance. Glitter can occur in any colour and is highly prized.

White Tummies

Many Bengals display a lighter or almost white belly, reminiscent of their wild Asian Leopard Cat ancestors. This pale underside creates a beautiful contrast with the richly coloured and patterned sides and back, and is a desirable trait in the breed.

Kitten Fuzzies

Bengal kittens go through a "fuzzy" stage between about 4 and 16 weeks of age, where their coat becomes dull and their pattern appears blurred. This is an inherited camouflage trait from the Asian Leopard Cat that protects wild kittens. The pattern clears and becomes vivid as the kitten matures.

Primordial Pouch

A loose flap of skin on the belly that is a normal and desirable trait in Bengals. This pouch allows for greater flexibility when running and jumping, and protects the internal organs. It is not a sign of being overweight and is shared with their wild ancestors.

Colour Genetics Basics

Agouti (A)

Controls whether the cat has banded/ticked hairs (agouti, A/-) producing the visible pattern, or solid-coloured hairs (non-agouti, a/a) producing melanistic/solid cats.

Brown (B)

Determines the density of eumelanin (dark pigment). B/- produces black/dark brown markings. The b allele produces chocolate, and bl produces cinnamon, though these are rare in Bengals.

Colourpoint (C)

The C locus controls snow colouring. C/- is full colour (brown/silver). cs is Siamese (Seal Lynx), cb is Burmese (Seal Sepia). cs/cb produces Seal Mink.

Dilute (D)

Two copies of the recessive d allele (d/d) dilute black to blue-grey and orange to cream. This is what produces blue Bengals.

Inhibitor (I)

The dominant inhibitor gene (I/-) suppresses warm-toned pigment, producing the silver colour. Without it (i/i), the cat expresses full, warm colouring.

Longhair (L)

Two copies of the recessive longhair allele (l/l) produce the Cashmere coat. Standard-coat Bengals can be L/L (not carrying longhair) or L/l (carrying one copy).
